Sidi Maula

Sidi Maula
(?-1292?)
An immigrant dervish from Central Asia whose hospice at Delhi started attracting numerous visitors after Jalal al-Din Firuz Khalji's accession (1290). Khan-i Khanan Mah-mud, the eldest son of the sultan, became an ardent follower of Sidi Maula. On Khan-i Khanan's death in 1292, many grandees from Bal-ban's era, including the Hindu chiefs Hatya Paik and Brinjin the kot-wal, engaged in a conspiracy to bring Sidi Maula to the throne. The conspiracy was betrayed by a newly recruited Mongol noble. Sidi Maula was interrogated in open court, where he was injured by a group of Haidari mendicants and trampled under the feet of an ele-phant on the order of the sultan's son Arkali Khan. Hatya Paik and Brinjin Kotwal were also executed. Others involved were exiled and their properties confiscated.
